A practical decision, with assumptions you can inspect

Retirement Withdrawal Stress Test

Enter an annual return path and compare it with the same returns in reverse order. See withdrawals, unmet spending and the year a portfolio runs out.

How to use, check and interpret this tool ↓

Inputs begin with a fictional teaching example. Replace them with your figures; nothing is saved automatically.

1. Set the assumptions

Hypothetical annual paths only. Withdraw at year start, then apply that year’s return and fee; a depleted portfolio cannot recover without new funding.

Other income stays at a fixed nominal amount for the stated first N years, then stops. Excess other income is not reinvested.

Percentage mode uses opening balance × percentage plus the one-off expense, capped at the remaining spending need. It can leave a spending shortfall.

2. Keep a local record

Saving is explicit and shared by EN/ZH pages on this site origin only. It does not sync devices or alter any other Numbrite book. JSON backups are unencrypted.

How this calculation works

Make the path explicit

Use commas or new lines for 1–60 annual percentage returns. The reverse control uses exactly the same numbers while spending dates and outside-income dates stay fixed. Annual fee multiplies post-return value by (1 − fee). Money is rounded to cents each year.

Reproduce the two-year lesson

Start MYR100,000, spend MYR10,000 at each year start, use zero inflation, fees and outside income, and returns 20,−20. The forward balance is MYR78,400; reverse is MYR74,400. With no withdrawals both end MYR96,000. These paths are invented, not a historical backtest.

Inspect unmet spending as well as the balance

Actual withdrawals cannot exceed available money. Unmet spending includes a percentage-rule limit as well as exhaustion. Inflation compounds the base spending, while the one-off extra occurs only in its chosen year. The result is not a probability of success, pension eligibility, investment recommendation or a safe-rate certification.

Use the result with confidence

Check an input before recording it

Begin with the labelled fictional example or replace the fields. Calculate to see the complete result and any shortfall. Editing an input hides the previous result until you calculate again. Saving records the inputs, not a bank transaction or an approval.

Keep the right local book

This tool can hold up to 20 saved records. Choose a record and press Load before editing it. Net-worth records use unique months and one base currency. A backup from another tool is rejected; restoration previews and confirms replacement of this book only.

Keep evidence you can understand

The calculated CSV contains the displayed model schedules, not a broker statement, tax filing or bank balance. JSON contains saved inputs and can hold private names and amounts. Store exports privately; clearing browser data or moving to another origin/device does not transfer records.
