A practical decision, with assumptions you can inspect

Overseas Investing Cost Comparison · MYR to USD

Compare monthly and grouped investing with equal MYR contributions. Include manual FX, spread, conversion charges, brokerage minimums and fund expenses.

How to use, check and interpret this tool ↓

Inputs begin with a fictional teaching example. Replace them with your figures; nothing is saved automatically.

1. Set the assumptions

MYR base, USD investment; rates are manual and constant. Money arrives at each month-end; grouped contributions stay in idle MYR cash until the purchase month.

Effective conversion rate = reference FX × (1 + markup). Costs exclude tax, selling/remittance fees, custody/platform charges not entered, and whole-share restrictions.

2. Keep a local record

Saving is explicit and shared by EN/ZH pages on this site origin only. It does not sync devices or alter any other Numbrite book. JSON backups are unencrypted.

How this calculation works

Keep the same contribution dates

All comparisons receive the same monthly contributions. Existing investments grow first, then the new contribution arrives and a scheduled batch can buy. Idle base cash earns zero. If the batch cannot cover conversion and brokerage, it remains cash and no transaction fee is charged.

Separate explicit fees from embedded costs

With MYR500 a month for one year, FX5, MYR5 conversion, USD1 minimum brokerage, zero percentage commission, growth, spread and fund fee: monthly investing ends MYR5,880; quarterly ends MYR5,960 from the same MYR6,000 contributions. The MYR80 difference isolates fixed fees, not future returns.

Read cost comparisons without a guaranteed winner

Brokerage is the larger of the entered minimum and a percentage of purchased notional; it is deducted from converted cash. Fund fees reduce NAV monthly using an annual factor. Explicit conversion and commission totals exclude the FX markup and fund expenses. The separate zero-fee comparison keeps the same cadence; differences also reflect compounding.

Use the result with confidence

Check an input before recording it

Begin with the labelled fictional example or replace the fields. Calculate to see the complete result and any shortfall. Editing an input hides the previous result until you calculate again. Saving records the inputs, not a bank transaction or an approval.

Keep the right local book

This tool can hold up to 20 saved records. Choose a record and press Load before editing it. Net-worth records use unique months and one base currency. A backup from another tool is rejected; restoration previews and confirms replacement of this book only.

Keep evidence you can understand

The calculated CSV contains the displayed model schedules, not a broker statement, tax filing or bank balance. JSON contains saved inputs and can hold private names and amounts. Store exports privately; clearing browser data or moving to another origin/device does not transfer records.
