What is Base64?

Base64 represents binary or text data using 64 printable ASCII characters. It is widely used to embed data in URLs, emails and data URIs. This tool encodes and decodes with correct UTF-8 handling, so non-English characters survive the round trip.

FAQ

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. All encoding and decoding happens locally in your browser.

Runs entirely offline in your browser.

Use the result with confidence

Encoding is not encryption

Use Encode for ordinary text and Decode for a Base64 string. The tool converts text to UTF-8 bytes before encoding, so Chinese and emoji can be represented. Anyone with the encoded string can decode it; Base64 does not protect a password or a private document.

A small round-trip check

Encoding Hello produces SGVsbG8=. Switch to Decode and paste SGVsbG8= to recover Hello. The equals sign is padding. Base64 normally expands three input bytes into four characters, so it is a transport format, not file compression.

If decoding fails

This is a text converter, not an arbitrary binary-file viewer. It expects standard Base64 and valid UTF-8 text. Remove a data: prefix before decoding; URL-safe Base64 using - and _ needs a different format conversion. Whitespace is ignored, but malformed bytes or symbols show an error instead of a believable partial result.
